Abstract:
Finland and Sweden are the world leaders in large scale wood fuel utilization for heat and power generation. A vast network of large installations and the great centralized demand around high capacity CHP generation units have created challenging requirements for the reliability and volumes of wood fuel supply all year round. To ensure smooth feedstock supply both countries have established a wide network of wood fuel terminals for securing continuous supply of wood fuel. The supply through terminal network accounts for 55% 7.8 TWh (28 PJ) of forest fuels delivered to heat and power plants in Sweden and 45% 6.4 TWh (23 PJ) in Finland. The objective of this study was to give an overview of the wood fuel terminal situation in Finland and Sweden, to study practical ways to improve the efficiency of large scale wood fuel supply through terminals and to compare wood fuel supply costs through terminals with direct supply chains.
