Abstract:
This paper gives an overview on the environmental assessment of biomethane systems, which was part of the Austria project “Biogas Overall Assessement”. A life cycle assessment was performed for 15 different biomethane systems. Besides the whole supply chain for the production and use of biomethane the reference use of the agricultural area for the cultivation of energy crops, the reference use of residues and the use of digestate as fertilizer were included in the assessment. The results of the life cycle assessment showed that all investigated systems reduced greenhouse gas emissions and fossil primary energy demand compared to fossil reference systems. The highest reductions are shown with liquid manure as raw material. The highest effects on the acidification potential have ammonia emissions from digestate and manure management.
