Abstract:
Each EU country has targets for increasing the use of renewable energy sources by 2020 and for Finland the target is 38 %. In 2012 the share of renewable energy sources was 35 % from total energy consumption and the main part of the growth is planned to be covered by forest biomass. Other significant renewable energy sources are wind power, solar power, biogas and agro biomass. This study concentrates on identifying the role of different renewable energy sources when regional possibilities, limitations and challenges are taken under consideration. Focus is to analyse concrete examples, action plans and projects from actual participants. In 2010 the share of renewable energy sources in South-East Finland was 57 % and in 2020 the share could be 63 %. In the future especially upgraded and refined biomass products such as biodiesel or gasified biomass could offer new business opportunities.
