Abstract:
Treated wastewater (BETP effluent) derived from cokemaking was evaluated as a potential culture medium for the microalga Chlorella vulgaris. Two laboratoryscale trials were performed to determine; (i) any toxic effects of the effluent on the growth of C. vulgaris and (ii) the suitability of the effluent as a sole source of nutrients and in particular, of nitrogen. Algae were cultured in a range of concentrations of BETP effluent in combination with either standard Jaworski's Medium (JM), JM minus nitrogen, or water. The effluent was rich in ammonical nitrogen, but deficient in phosphate and this deficiency meant that nutrient addition was required to sustain growth. The alga utilised the nitrogen present in BETP effluent as effectively as from standard Jaworski's Medium. No inhibitory effects on growth were observed when Jaworski's Medium was amended to 50 per cent concentration with BETP effluent. When cultured with BETP and JMminus nitrogen (to provide nutrients other than nitrogen), efficiency of nitrogen removal was between 86 and 87 per cent in samples containing effluent, compared to 90 per cent in Jaworski’s medium.
