Abstract:
Estimating the benefits of grazing cattle manure anaerobic digestion depends not only on understanding the biogas energetic contribution but also nutrients dynamics in the soil-plant system. Available simulation tools normally focus on these two branches separately. A new tool was developed starting from the Century soil organic matter model, turning into dynamic variables its grazing and organic matter addition parameters. New routines were added to simulate herd evolution, animal nutrition, manure management and anaerobic digestion. The Modified Century Model (MCM) can be used to provide insights about more efficient and environmentally sound manure management strategies. Model was applied to some typical situations of cattle livestock in Brazil and simulated manure composition (carbon, nitrogen and lignin), soil nitrogen losses for different animal occupation rates and intake versus feed characteristics, among many other parameters. Alternatives to valuate digestate nitrogen contents are presented. MCM can also support greenhouse gases emission analysis considering carbon dynamics in soil, plants and animals. Simulations confirm many authors who state that anaerobic digestion can improve soil organic matter on livestock operations when digestate is returned to the forage planting area.
