Abstract:
The characterization of distinct ash particle size from different ash flows in a biomass thermal power plant using bubbling fluidised bed technology was done. The physical characteristics and chemical composition of bottom ashes differ significantly from the fly ashes. Bottom and fly ash are enriched in Si. However, fly ashes from electrostatic precipitator are also enriched in other chemical elements typical of the inorganic content of biomass. The pH of the several ash leaching solutions was alkaline, with values in range 11.3 to 12.5. The conductivity of the ashes varied in the range 1.0 to 12.1 mS/cm. Considering the water soluble elements, it was observed that Ca was the element in higher concentration in the leaching solutions, followed by K, Na and Cl-. Among the solubilised heavy metals, Zn appeared in higher concentration in the leaching solutions of ashes. This study shows differences in the characteristics of the distinct ash particle sizes. Therefore, the study of the ashes characteristics is important to define appropriated ash management strategies.
