Abstract:
Hexagonal mesoporous structured supports, SBA-15, and Zr incorporated SBA-15 (Zr-SBA-15), were synthesized and impregnated with 1% (w/w) Pd for partial hydrogenation of biodiesel derived from soybean oil. All catalysts were characterized by small-angle and wide-angle XRD, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and N2 adsorption–desorption (BET). The reaction was conducted at 100 °C and 4 bar hydrogen partial pressure and biodiesel samples were collected every 30 min for 4 h reaction time. The chemical composition of samples was determined by gas chromatography (GC). The result showed that Pd supported on Zr-SBA-15 (Pd/Zr-SBA-15) exhibited the higher percentage of C18:2 conversion and lower cis-C18:1 selectivity than Pd/SBA-15, which resulted from the larger pore diameter of support (8.9 nm). Besides, the oxidative stability of biodiesel was considerably improved.
