Abstract:
In this work, the organosolv pretreatment of barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.) straw was studied using a batch reactor. The acetone-based organosolv fractionation process was conducted at 140-180 oC for 0-40 min (not including preheating time) and was catalyzed by H2SO4. A new model was formed, in order to simulate the kinetics of the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses. This model incorporates the acidity of the liquid phase as affected by the acids produced within the complex network of reactions and by the neutralization due to the straw ash content. Moreover, the temperature profile and the pH of the process were incorporated using a new modified severity factor R0*. The model parameters were calculated using non-linear regression analysis. Process parameters investigated herein include variation in reaction time, reaction temperature and sulfuric acid concentration. The optimal reaction conditions resulting to maximum sugar yields were estimated according to the proposed simulation model. Maximum sugar yields were obtained, up to 7.8% w/w total glucose on initial cellulose basis for log R0*=2.06, up to 78% w/w total xylose on initial xylan basis for log R0*=1.38 and up to 33% w/w total sugars on polysaccharides basis for the same severity factor.
