Abstract:
This paper tackles the issue of how to reliably estimate biomass availability for energy through spatial systems in multi-purpose forests located in Mediterranean areas. In order to analyse and assess reliability of current methodologies in Mediterranean forests characterised by multiple purposes, two pilot sites, located in Southern Italy, were considered. Three different estimation models were implemented on GIS and, then, applied to those sites. Their main assumptions were compared and results were analysed. To evaluate their reliability in providing biomass amounts coherent with real conditions, reference was made to the two Forestry Management Plans, to calculate availability of wood for energy production and compare results to those obtained by the considered models. As a result of analyses carried out on the two pilot sites, it emerged that a critical and accurate choice of the estimation model should be undertaken, to develop sustainable wood-energy supply chains. It is also relevant to take into account morphological and infrastructural conditions, which highly affect biomass availability.
