Abstract:
Norwegian bioenergy plants are facing stricter regulations and low energy prices. Process optimization for improved control can be interesting to look into in order to increase the profit margins of existing plants. Increased process knowledge has the potential to provide the necessary input to improved combustion control strategies, which can result in reduced emission levels, improved efficiencies, increased capacity and reduced maintenance costs. In this study, a measurement campaign was carried out at a 10 MW grate fired plant burning wood briquettes. The aim was to measure the concentration of different gaseous species inside the combustion chamber, at different locations and at varying operating conditions. Measurements were taken close to the fuel bed, in the freeboard and at the combustion chamber exit. The plant load was varied between 4.5 and 10.5 MW. The measurements provide valuable information for improved combustion control strategies as well as for validation of modelling approaches, or input to these. The measurements provide useful data for CFD modelling of the plant both for the modelling of the fuel bed, the freeboard and flue gas emission levels.
