Abstract:
Residual wet biomass waste streams are transformed into hydrochar, a lignite like solid, by Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) on an industrial scale pilot plant. Hydrochar is supposed to be a valuable energy carrier. This is demonstrated in combustion tests in an industrial scale boiler. Furthermore, gasification tests were carried out in a laboratory scale fluidized bed gasification facility. The results of these tests show a pathway for future applications of this new energy carrier in combustion and gasification technology depending on the ash content. Wet, residual biomass feedstocks can hardly be recovered in an economic viable way due to their inhomogeneity and composition. The HTC process is suitable to transform these feedstocks into hydrochar. Hydrochar has a higher carbon and energy content with respect to the raw material. Furthermore, it can be dried more energy efficiently due to an open pore structure and a less polar composition. In form of pellets, it can be considered a very suitable solid fuel. The resulting energy carrier has has given a good performance for combustion and gasification. Emissions and conversion parameters have been tested in several facilities.
