Abstract:
Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) is an empirical batch test that mimics the continuous operation of a ball and track type of industrial coal pulverizer. It was developed to characterize how difficult it would be to grind coals to the particle size necessary for effective combustion in pulverized coal fired boilers. The method does not apply to biomass and pre-treated biomass materials for a variety of reasons. The study examines grinding behavior of torrefied biomass fuels and steam exploded wood. The samples were milled in various lab and bench scale mills while particle size and morphology of the grinded products were evaluated. The effective grinding energy was also measured. The aim was to develop a lab method or adapt an existing method for use in characterizing the grindability of pre-treated biomass. An important aspect of the study was to establish a link between material properties of the fuels and the grindability criteria. The study shows an approach for predicting the grinding behavior of pre-treated biomass fuels for application in pulverized coal boilers. Using particle image analysis, the impact of pre-treatment on particle morphology can be clearly seen.
