Abstract:
Sugarcane straw ashes characterization by simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) presented in this work, offered important insights about its behavior under high temperatures conditions. Although straw (composed by dry leaves, green leaves and tops) has a high energetic value, it is not established as a main feedstock for combustion purposes, due to fireside problems as slagging and fouling. Individual analysis from straw components showed that ashes from green leaves and tops had higher concentrations of potassium, sulfur and chlorine, as well as, fusion temperatures between 950ºC - 1050ºC. In contrast, dry leaves ashes had major concentrations in refractory materials such silica and lime, therefore, showed a more stable behavior without melting at temperatures below 1200°C.
