Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to present the current state of affairs and future goals concerning biomass targets for electricity and heat production in South Africa. Biomass availability for energy projects in South Africa is restricted due to the dry climate and the competing demand for biomass for products and energy. The targets presented in this paper are the result of an intensive analysis and consultation in South Africa in the framework of the BAPEPSA project. Results of the analysis show that 54,7 Million tons indigenous biomass could become available of which 24 Mt (dry) biomass could be used for power for almost 5 GWe installed capacity by 2030, yielding 36 TWh per year of renewable electricity (between 10 and 15 % of total electricity production).
