Abstract:
To date the formation of organic condensable species (mono aromatics, PAH) - referred to as "tar" - remains a major technical implementation and economic challenge in emerging these technologies based on biomass as fuel. Instead of costly gas "washing" or catalytic degradation of tar species, the possible application of the "on-board" available char, generated in the gasification process is in the focus of this work. The origin of the char used for this purpose is the biogeneous fuel used for fuelling the gasification process. This work is in contrast to studies making use of different kinds of commercially available activated carbons. Char pyrolyzed in an intermediate biomass pyrolysis process is compared to char, which originated in a fluidized bed gasifier. Depending on precursor properties, process conditions shall be identified allowing to produce carbons suitable to be used in gas processing for tar species adsorption in situ or downstream.
