Abstract:
Small-scale residential biomass combustion for space heating and warm water production holds a considerable share on the total energy production from biomass. Regarding PM emissions a disadvantage of biomass based residential heating technologies compared to fossil fuel fired systems still exists. Thus, new and sustainable technologies for residential heating with high efficiency and low emissions with a special focus on dust are required. A new ultra-low emission technology for small-scale pellet and woodchips combustion has been developed by Windhager Zentralheizung Technik GmbH in cooperation with BIOS BIOENERGIESYSTEME GmbH. The technology is based on the application of primary measures and has been successfully tested within the EU FP7-project EU-UltraLowDust. The new ultra-low emission boiler technology can achieve almost zero CO, OGC and dust emissions and also reduces NOx emissions in comparison to the present state-of-the-art. The most relevant achievement is the reduction of TSP in the flue gas by a factor of 10 at full and partial load which was confirmed not only at test stand but also in field measurements. With the new combustion technology based on extreme air staging ultra-low emission operation has been demonstrated and it has been shown that in future for ultra-low emission pellet and woodchips combustion secondary measures are not needed anymore, which represents a relevant technological milestone and a technological breakthrough. The market introduction of the new technology has been launched in 2016.
