Abstract:
Renewable industrial biowastes have become attractive resources for the production of important economic platform chemicals that can be used in the production of biofuels, pharmaceutical products, custom chemicals etc. We have developed a Lewis acid-catalyzed dehydration protocol that converts residual carbohydrates in molasses to 5-chloromethylfurfural (CMF) or 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The conversion efficiency is optimal with stoichiometric amounts of NaCl in CMF synthesis and using CrCl3·6H2O/NH4Br catalytic system in HMF synthesis.
