Abstract:
In this work, heat requirements for pyrolysis were estimated and product distributions were determined in a batch fixed-bed reactor operating without the use of a carrier gas. Pyrolysis under a self-generated atmosphere is of practical importance in batch carbonization systems, where there is no need to use an inert gas flow through the biomass bed. This allows the use of smaller setups, gives a non-condensable product with greater energy content, and reduces the energy requirements (because there is no inert gas to heat, and secondary exothermic reactions may be favored due to increased gas residence time). In these and any other pyrolysis systems, estimation of the energy requirements of the process is of utmost importance for efficient design and scale-up. Here, a simple and moderately accurate method has been developed for estimating the heat of the pyrolysis process.
