Abstract:
The European Union has rest ambitious targets of raising the share of EU energy consumption produced from renewable resources from 20% by 2020 to 27% by 2030. The aim of the study is to assess the role of biomass in renewable energy as a share in the gross final energy consumption in the European Union (the EU-28) in 2020 and beyond. The original study presents a literature review including the latest studies on the use of forest and agricultural biomass for bioenergy. The study shows the specific role of forest and agricultural biomass demands in the 2020 RE targets of EU-28 countries. The role of biomass in total national renewable energy targets are discussed for each country group. Moreover, the study presents the biomass supply potential in the EU based on the actual and the future contribution of biomass for renewable energy, further specified into the future availability of woody biomass resources in the EU Member States. As a conclusion, the study shows the future progress and make a recommendation how to increase the likelihood of achieving targets for the EU.
