Abstract:
The use of biodiesel as alternative to petroleum-derived fuel has been limited by both economic and technical issues. Furthermore, to be commercialized, biodiesel must also meets with the quality standards established by relevant norms. In this sense, poor biodiesel oxidation stability is one of the main barriers, so the addition of antioxidants to biodiesel is usually required in order to comply the specifications for its commercialization. In the present work, production of antioxidant additives for biodiesel has been evaluated by two different techniques: solid/liquid with organic solvents and thermochemical treatment under different reaction media (mixtures of water and organic solvent, as ethanol and hexane among others tested). These low cost and renewable biodiesel additives could replace costly synthetic biodiesel additives commercially used to date. The oxidation stability was clearly improved when adding small dosages (up to 3 wt. %) of the additive produced by thermochemical treatment.
