Abstract:
Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient in organic life which is currently obtained from a non-renewable source (phosphate rock). Residues such as manure appear as a P source, since P can be recovered by chemical treatment using acids. Due to the great amount of manure generated per year, this residue should be properly managed. One of this residue management options is pyrolysis, which results in non-condensable, liquid and solid products. The latter (char) shows potential application as adsorbent solid. Acid activation prior to pyrolysis can improve the performance of char as adsorbent material. The present work proposes a synergistic process combining acid extraction and subsequent pyrolysis of the solid that could allow the simultaneous phosphorus recovery and production of solid adsorbents from manure.
