Abstract:
With the aim to extend short-rotation forestry for bioenergy purposes with poplars in Southern Italy and to verify the biomass production of poplar clones in these environments, characterized by low water availability, five trials were established in the frame of the FAESI Project during the last eight years. Unrooted cuttings of different genotypes of Populus spp were planted in single rows with densities ranging from 1111 to 8333 trees per hectare and harvesting cycle ranging from two to five years. The aboveground biomass production of the best poplar clones in three sites (Apulia and Sicily) is under 5 Mg ha-1year-1 of dry matter; while in the other two sites, both in Calabria, is over 10 Mg ha-1year-1. Poplar SRC is possible with good results only in limited areas characterized by high rainfall or by the presence of a constant water table at depths accessible to the roots, as in the Apennine valleys, or alternatively using waste water as irrigation.
