Abstract:
The focus of the study described here was to clarify the potential of decreasing the use of fossil fuels in regional level. Study focused on the region of South Savo where utilisation of forest biomass has long traditions since 1990’s. According to national obligations, the use of oil and other fossil fuels should be minimised by 2030 which creates also regional pressures to replace fossil fuels in energy use. Study utilised regional energy balance method when evaluating current status of energy supply and future scenario for 2030. In South Savo, use of renewable energy sources is already above national average but it can be further increased by 2030. Especially, smaller heating plants can increase their use of biomass fuels. Most important primary energy sources regionally are forest biomass and other wood fuels. Share of renewable energy sources from gross final energy consumption in South Savo could be increased to 54% by 2030 from current 46%.
