Abstract:
In this study, a pilot-scale continuous tubular reactor was evaluated for the pretreatment of agave bagasse. The pilot-scale tubular reactor includes three main process stages executed in sequence: extrusion, autohydrolysis and steam explosion. Two screw conveyor speeds were evaluated in the reactor, high and low with 4.2 and 2.09 rpm, respectively. The enzymatic saccharification efficiency, inhibitor compounds formation and the final effect on the alcoholic fermentation process were measured. The main effects of pretreatment was observed in the inhibitor concentrations, when the agave bagasse was conveyed at 2.09 rpm (long residence time) a higher concentration of hidroximethil furfural and furfural were observed in the hydrolysate.
