Abstract:
Biomass is a sustainable, renewable, and environmentally friendly source of energy. Reaching total efficiencies of higher than 95 % make biomass driven micro-CHP plants to the next generation solution, replacing fossil fuel driven thermal plants and traditional biomass combustion plants in various applications. There is a strong need for highly efficient, simple designed micro-CHP plants with compact dimensions, utilizing low cost biomass fuels. Such kind of micro-CHP plant was developed by the company Hargassner GmbH in cooperation with the Institute of Thermal Engineering at Graz University of Technology. The new, already commercially available micro-CHP plant provides an electrical output of 20 kW with a total efficiency of 97 %. The plant covers a footprint of approximately 2.5 m² and is therefore one of the most compact micro-CHP’s available. Performance studies showed, that electrical, total and chemical efficiencies amounted to 23 %, 97 % and 70 %, respectively. Fuel gas tar contents were smaller than 100 mg/m³. Not least for this reason, 24/7 operation is possible except periodically required maintenance every 500 hours which is determined by the engine oil exchange interval.
