Abstract:
Biomass use in many European villages is still currently focused on the production of heat by burning the woody biomass or agricultural residues, typically in low energy efficient equipment, such as fireplaces, stoves, and boilers. In fact, rural Europe, regardless of several EU and national funded projects in the past years, performing successfully innovative technologies and studies demonstrating the high potential of biomass upgrade, the full-scale application did not yet captured the opportunities / profit from this biomass potential. In this work, it is introduced the integrated village-based biorefinery concept (“VBB”), that aims to stimulate application of biorefineries based on biomass valorisation concept, in small-scale villages (500 - 2000 inhabitants). This concept is based in four modules: a) biomass production and residue collection, b) anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrade to biomethane, c) microalgae cultivation for advanced wastewater treatment and d) CHP production; creating synergies between process streams.
