Abstract:
In Finland, common payment base for forest chips is energy content and this leads need to measure the quality of the chips at the power plant. The low energy content of the forest chips calls for high receiving capacity at the facility to ensure continuous operation of the power plant. This paper analyzes three different sampling and measurements methods and focuses how these impact on receiving facility capacity. One measurement system is manual where a sample is taken by a truck driver and analyzed by laboratorian. At second measurement system, samples are taken automatically and these are sent to a laboratory to analyze. In both systems, getting results takes at least 24 hours. The third system is continuous measurement system, where forest chips are x-ray scanned from moving stream. This method gives results immediately but requires chips to be sorted by the supplier at the scanner eliminating mixing different deliveries before measurement.
