Abstract:
The combustion of agricultural waste or their use for the production of thermal energy (also in small plants, without emissions abatement systems) represents an important source of atmospheric pollution. The knowledge of the emission factors of the pollutants produced by biomass combustion systems (without abatement systems) is useful for the valorization of agricultural residues, often burnt directly on the cultivation field, which could supply to the energy production system a non-edible biomass and low cost. The aim of this work was to study and characterize the emission from combustion of wheat straw and rice straw. The biomass was burned in a small boiler (80 kWth) and for each type of straw, an iso-kinetic emission sampling was performed in a chimney suitably arranged to accommodate the sampling probe. In addition, was measured NOx, SOx, CO, CO2 and the obtained samples, as the residual ashes of each combustion, were analyzed in ICP-MS for macro, micro and trace elements. The results have shown that the combustion process is limited by the large amount of ash produced, which has encouraged high concentrations of particulates and high concentrations of carbon monoxide. The bad combustion has consequently generated high con-centrations of all metals (As, Cr, Cu, Zn) especially in rice straws.
