Abstract:
Chicken manure refers to the secondary biomass. Despite the increased ash content on dry basis (20–30 wt.%) chicken manure has a calorific value to 13 MJ/kg. Storage of it in addition to the expropriation of land suitable for use in agriculture leads to the loss of an energy source. The purpose of this work is to investigate the torrefaction process in relation to chicken manure, determine the optimal conditions of the process, and comprehensively study the properties of all the obtained products. These are solid residue, non-condensable gases and torrefaction liquid. The elemental composition (C, H, N, S, and O), ash content, hygroscopicity limit, the lower calorific value of the initial raw material and solid residue, torrefaction liquid chemical composition, calorific value and specific volume yield of non-condensable gases are presented in this paper. Material balance is calculated. Special attention is paid to the study of the torrefaction effect on thermotechnical characteristics of the feedstock. It is the lower calorific value and hygroscopicity limit. The optimal conditions of the torrefaction process with regard to chicken manure are chosen.
