Abstract:
The French start-up BIO-THINK finalized a new process for using biomass1 to produce second generation biofuels. The objective was to set a new type of biofuels from food wastes (canteens, supermarkets) and agricultural by-products (straw,…) or intermediate energy crops2 in order to avoid the negative impacts on food production of first generation biofuels. This process is simpler than most of the other second generation biofuels processes (pyrolysis, Biomass to Liquid,…). It doesn’t need costly phases of biomass pretreatments, as it is the case for cellulosic ethanol. It is not presently applicable to products as wood, but can use all the materials that allow the production of biogas and biomethane3. It produces liquid and not gazeous biofuels. It comprises three stages : the production of volatile fatty acids (fermentation), their transformation into fuels (alcanes or esters), then the valorization of by-products (solid and liquid effluents). The yields are hight in all the steps. It is today unique in the world. It could be a revolution in the field of second generation biofuels.
