Abstract:

Following the EU and national legislations and directives, Greece has recently developed a relevant action plan to enhance the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and to promote energy savings by 2030. Among others, the major goals of this action plan is to implement biomass projects of in total 250 MW capacity, to produce final energy from biomass equal to 0.27-0.41 Mtoe, to strengthen the available district heating installations, especially those using RES and to take advantage of the biomass produced from agricultural and agro-food industries. In other EU countries like Germany, Finland, Belgium, Italy, Austria, there is a large number of biomass to heat conversion plants, using different technologies. These plants are in general divided into small (<5 MW), medium (5-20 MW) and large (>20 MW) scale units. On the contrary, Greece presently falls behind on fulfilling its individual targets for biomass utilization. In this context, the present works deals with the conceptual technical design and complete economic analysis of a district heating plant. The plant is designed to be installed in a Greek rural area of approximately 3,000-5,000 residents and to eventually cover the complete heating demands of this area, upon the insertion of biomass (up to 100%) in the fuel mix.
