Abstract:

Energy intensive industries are among the biggest contributors for carbon emissions. In countries with national and international obligations to reduce emissions, industries must embrace new sources of energy in order to approach carbon neutrality. Biological based fuels are an option to decarbonize those industries; however, its use may be conditioned by a number of factors such as resource availability and sustainability requirements. Due to the diversified nature of these factors, some objective others more subjective, value-based multi-criteria decision analysis methodology was used to model a scoring system for industries. Industries’ characterization makes use of data about resources they use, collected in the literature and by means of a survey. In this way, it contributes to stimulate industry by evidencing what would be possible to do, or it serves as a guide for the Government to formulate appropriate public policies and regulation. Several industries were studied, including agriculture, food, leather goods, wood and cork, pulp and paper, chemical and petrochemical. Preliminary results indicate that all are, to some extent, adequate to adopt bioenergy. However, for example in the agriculture sector, if some industries just need to make use of the resource widely available, others would need a re-location to improve suitability.
