Abstract:

In this study, the effect of the catalyzed pretreatment process parameters on the composition of the residue from birch plywood production – veneer shorts and bark – was studied. It is known that aluminum sulfate is less aggressive than the conventionally used catalyst – sulfuric acid. This suggests that the C-6 carbohydrates in the raw material could be intact after the furfural obtaining process. The chemical composition of birch inner bark was determined. The effect of catalyzed hydrothermal pretreatment process parameters, such as material initial moisture content (17 – 29 %), treatment temperature (165 – 180°C), catalyst concentration (10 – 18%), catalyst amount (5 – 9 wt%) and steam flow rate (120 – 240 mL/min) at the constant pretreatment time (40 min) on the content of carbohydrates in the birch inner bark lignocellulosic residue was studied. The results indicated that the temperature has the highest impact on the degradation of cellulose, and the increase of the catalyst concentration allows to save more C-6 carbohydrates in the residue after the furfural obtaining process. Meanwhile, the increase of other studied hydrolysis process parameters contributes to greater degradation of C-6 carbohydrates. The degradation degree of glucose is reduced from 37.5 to 0.2 %
