Abstract:
The project LIFE-Stymfalia ‘Sustainable management and financing of wetland biodiversity – The case of Lake Stymphalia’ (2013-2018) aimed among others to create conditions for the financial sustainability of the wetland’s management & conservation. Among the objectives of the management plan is to control the spreading of reed monoculture on specific points of the lake and exploit the harvested biomass for energy production. As a consequence, the aim of this work was to study the fuel properties of the harvested reed biomass and evaluate its potential for biomass and bioenergy production. The properties of reed as a fuel are described and compared with other biomass solid fuels such as energy crops and agricultural residues. Calorimetry and elemental analyses were conducted to define calorific value (gross and net), proximate analyses to define ash content, volatiles and fixed carbon as well as measurements to define the characteristic ash melting temperatures of the reed. In addition to laboratory analyses, work included reed pelletisation. The pelletizing process of harvested reed is discussed. Pellets were also analysed to determine their calorific value (gross and net), volatiles and fixed carbon as well as to define mechanical strength. The possibilities and conditions for the reed utilisation were assessed and evaluated in the light of its use for the production of solid biomass in the form of pellets and briquettes, and compost.
