Abstract:
The most promising biomass pre-treatment / deconstruction processes available require high tempera-tures, typically in the range 100-250ºC, which is a significant constraint due to the inherent energy requirements. Therefore, there is a need for alternative heating techniques that not only reduce the energy input, but that can also increase the overall process efficiency. Microwave (MW) is being widely studied in many chemical areas due to its high heating efficiency and easy operation. However, there has been no published bibliometric study of research on this field. This work is focused on characteristics of the literature on the pre-treatment of biomass using Microwave published during the last three decades, based on the database of Web of Knowledge and its implications using the scientometric techniques. The results show that the literature on pre-treatment of biomass using Microwave has grown exponentially in last ten years reaching in 2018, a total of 518 publications. The most significant document type is the journal article, constituting 95% of the total literature including reviews and proceedings. English is the predominant language (99.3%). The Chinese Academy of Sciences is the largest institutional contributor. ‘‘Biore-source Technology’’ is the most significant journal with 105 published articles. The total number of citations is 12816, giving a ratio for the ‘‘Average Citations per Item’’ as 24.74 and ‘‘H-index’’ as 51. A list of the most-cited authors is also presented and discussed as well as the list of the current “20 hottest articles”. This scientometric eval-uation shows the increased relevance of microwave on the studies on new emerging pre-treatment technologies with-in the biorefineries.
