Abstract:
Biochar is a porous, adsorbent material whose properties are affected by the source material used as well as the conditions of production. Higher temperatures in the production process result in more porous charcoal. The properties of biochar can be improved by activating it either physically, chemically or biologically. “Bioli – Biocoal for a cleaner environment and new business in South Savo” project managed jointly by the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) and Mikkeli Development Miksei Ltd – studies novel marketable biochar products and applications. The project has provided the Southern Savonia region of Finland with concrete capacities for the emergence of biochar-based business. One of Bioli’s research areas focuses on establishing whether biochar can be used for the removal of hydrogen sulphide in biogas processes similarly to activated carbon. The research studied biochar that was produced from spruce at a temperature of 430 °C. Biochar’s ability to bind hydrogen sulphide was tested using various hydrogen sulphide concentrations at XAMK’s environmental laboratory as well as at a waste management facility and a wet digestion biogas plant. The results showed that the biochar used had good properties for binding hydrogen sulphide.
