Abstract:
The present work analyses the technical feasibility of a novel process for the valorization of sodium carbonate solutions from carbon dioxide captured in a biogas upgrading stage. The valorization proposed is carried out through the precipitation of calcium carbonate as an added value product, through the use as precipitating agent of a waste (i.e. red gypsum). The purpose of this paper is to study the effect which the different parameters may have on precipitation performance, which have been selected based on previous studies. These parameters were temperature, molar ratio precipitant agent/carbonated solvent and the reaction time. In these experiments, commercial gypsum was employed as a benchmark to determine the precipitation efficiency and corroborate the technical feasibility of the process. Additionally, Raman analyzes were carried out to check the purity of the final product. Precipitation test results show efficiencies between 53-82% by varying the various parameters mentioned above. Raman analysis shows that the final product has sufficient purity to continue investigating the potential of the process.
