Abstract:
Industrial waste streams from pharmaceutical and galvanic industries can be highly heterogeneous and often pose special challenges to the traditionally known treatment processes. Residual wastewaters from these industries can hold increased amounts of precious metals such as Ag, Au, Pt and Pd. Unfortunately low concentrations and the presence of organic impurities have so far made these waste streams unattractive as secondary resources. A plethora of microorganisms are capable of producing bio-mineralized, nanoscale products of various compositions intra- and extracellularly. This bio-mineralization phenomenon shall be exploited to purify these special waste waters and simultaneously recover their precious metal content as nanoparticles .
