Abstract:
This paper reviews and presents an outlook on studies that cover what is defined as fast hydrothermal liquefaction (fast HTL). A special focus is on the reactor design, going from batch reactors to various type of continuous flow reactors including the nozzle reactor concept, a type of plug-flow reactor. It appears that the nozzle reactor design meets all the requirement for fast HTL, capable of very high heating rate; short residence times; low particle deposition and no premature heating of the biomass slurry. Other factors that have influence on the process are discussed such as process design and engineering, feed pumping and feedstock’s ash content and biomass type. Recommendations for future study on developing the concept of nozzle reactor for fast HTL are made based on critical and thorough analyses focusing on the mixing geometries and process parameter, including addition of reducing gases for in situ upgrading of the products.
