Abstract:
The focus of this study was to discuss on what is the status of biomass in Finland if consumption of the peat and coal will be restricted in Finnish CHP plants. The study was carried out by a questionnaire sent for 26 large Finnish CHP power plants producing district heat. Response rate of the questionnaire was 88 %. The study concentrated on supply security of domestic fuels: peat and solid wood fuels. Also supply of fuels and average storing volumes were studied. Effects of restricted use of peat and coal on Finnish CHP power plants and how power plants were prepared for situation were analyzed. According to answers, if consumption of peat and coal will be restricted in the future for example following effects were mentioned: the price and availability of biomass, the technical improvements for boilers and national supply security. The survey was carried out for the National Emergency Supply Agency of Finland in 2019. After the survey, the operation environment has been changed and it seems the use of peat will mainly end in the next decade. During the last year the use of peat has decreased more rapidly than expected and main reason for this is a more expensive emission allowance. The energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables is a big opportunity for forest biomass. The energy transition is an international challenge and there is The Just Transition Fund in the EU level. The JTF actions apply to The Finnish peat industry.
