Abstract:
Biomass fuels, particularly agricultural residues, are the future biofuels as suitable replacements for the clean wood in bioenergy production since they can be considered for value-added material applications as well. Ash melting mitigation is an important challenge which should be taken into account in this development. In this paper, ash melting behavior of rice husk and rice straw as the silica rich biomass fuels were investigated during combustion. The impact of fuel blending and chemical pre-treatment on the ash melting behavior of the fuels have been revealed. For the first time, the initiation of slag formation was monitored in rice husk and rice straw in both macroscopic and microscopic levels in order to enhance the porosity of biogenic silica.
