Abstract:
Finland has set targets for halving the traffic-emitted greenhouse gases by 2030, and total elimination of fossil fuels by 2045. The targets are national and call for more detailed regional assessments of emission-saving possibilities. This paper presents a simulation model and a case study focusing on the current and future use of alternative motive powers in a regional traffic system in Eastern Finland. The study is restricted to passenger traffic and the use of private cars. The results of the study indicate that the current speed of investments in biogas infrastructure and the electricity distribution network are on a sufficient level to reach the target of a carbon neutral region by 2040. The paper also discusses that the slow renewal rate of private cars in the region might be the most significant factor delaying the fulfilment of the targets.
