Abstract:
After removing the nut or kernel from cashew nut shell (CNS) this biomass is considered as a residue. However, CNS is an interesting source of important chemicals such as phenolic, antioxidants, bioactive compounds, as well as, natural fibers, and dyes. CNS from Vichada, Colombia has not been characterized. Therefore, its potential to identify target components for developing value-added products and residual biomass valorization pathways stills un-exploited. Consequently, in this study, residual CNSs from cashew crops in Vichada, Colombia was characterized. Chemical analysis of CNS and thermal properties of extracted oil was performed. It was found that the residue CNS from Vichada is mainly composed of cashew nut shell liquid ( . 80 wt.%). This dark brown oil that is corrosive is composed of phenolic compounds such as anacardic acid, cardanol, and cardol. Additionally, the chemical analysis of CNS showed that the main fiber in this residue is hemicellulose ( . 5 wt.%), the balance comprises lignin (. 1 wt.%), and others. The thermal properties showed that CNS does not present degradation until 120°C, and its HHV (21 MJ/kg) is comparable with fuels such as coal, and ethanol, which suggests that this biomass could be burned to produce energy. Finally, these results suggest that CNS from Vichada is a suitable renewable source of valuable chemicals especially the cashew nut shell liquid.
