Abstract:
Within the on-going EU Horizon 2020 project AgroBioHeat a comprehensive platform for overcoming barriers and to support the market uptake of agrobiomass heating shall be provided. One aspect of AgroBioHeat concerns investigations regarding the utilization of agrobiomass fuels in state-of-the-art residential boilers. Therefore, a series of test runs at three project partners is performed of which the test runs at BIOS are already finalized. Combustion tests with sunflower husk pellets, agropellets, poplar chips, miscanthus, olive stones and maize cobs have been performed at two different small scale boilers. The results of these test runs show that with the exception of maize cobs all fuels can be utilized at efficiencies, CO, OGC and PM emissions which fulfill the demands of the Ecodesign Directive for wood fuels. Due to the, compared with wood fuels, significantly higher N contents of the fuels tested, NOx emissions exceeded the level of wood combustion and consequently the respective limit value according to Ecodesign. The NOx emissions however, were still in the range of the limit value of the MCP directive for medium-scale combustion plants. The maize cobs tested turned out as not suitable for residential combustion since their exceptionally high K contents led to unacceptably high PM emissions.
