Abstract:
The current petrochemical consumption is damaging the ecosystem. Biooil represents an alternate source of key chemical compounds applied in several industries. In this project, the first phase i.e., microwave pyrolysis of Kraft lignin (KL) in presence of wood biochar is being carried out to obtain biooil with lower moisture and higher aromatic organic content. The innovation of this study aims to 1) investigate the impact of using spruce and hemp biochar, at varied ratios and operating temperatures, on the yield and composition of the biooil; and 2) synthesize a biooil that can be taken as a precursor material for conversion into a novel bio-based thermoplastic polymer. At the time of this writing, the observation and primary quantitative results suggest that spruce biochar as a microwave receptor, produces a higher average KL biooil yield at all power levels compared to hemp biochar. With increasing power level from 300 W to 600 W, the biooil yield increased with reduced biochar yield. The combination of 50:50 ratio of KL and spruce biochar feedstock exhibited the highest biooil yield.
