Abstract:
In Latvia, 47 biogas plants use the waste and residues of agricultural products as raw materials. The digestate obtained from them is used for fertilizing of fields. About 1.0 million tons of digestate were produced annually. Also, around 16 000 t of wood ashes are produced in biomass burning process in Latvia, The thick fractions of digestates obtained in the fractionation equipment of the manure or plants biomass based biogas plants of the project partners were used for digestate-ash mixtures preparation and granulation. In laboratory conditions, the mixtures of digestate and wood ash were prepared in four different proportions. The different mixtures were granulated. Chemical analyses of mixtures show decrease of most plant nutrients, except the calcium, if the ash content increase in mixtures. Especially sharp decrease was observed for nitrogen content, that can be justified by the very low content of nitrogen in ashes. The granules were dried both under a flow of warm air (50°C) for 50 hours and in a laboratory conditions at room temperature for 30 days. Both drying methods provide granules that does not crumble and were suitable for transportation.
