Abstract:

Novel wood chip fuels produced with a duplex-spiral chipper, the so called “Effits”, have an innovative particle structure with coarse, pre-broken particles and low share of fines, leading to overall new physical fuel properties. These properties were believed to have positive effects on the suitability for wood chip gasification. To test this, the novel fuel was produced from Norway spruce stemwood and combusted in a small-scale gasifier CHP plant. During the gasification trials, various performance data (thermal and electrical balances) and functional parameters (reformer temperatures, differential pressures) of the plant were recorded. Overall, the Effits showed higher plant efficiencies (68.5 %) compared to the reference fuel (i. e. standard wood chips of the same raw material, 64.4 %). Other operational process parameters (increasing reformer temperature and decreasing reformer pressure) indicate that the novel fuel shows advantages for gasification compared to the reference wood chips.
