Abstract:
In this study, potential of using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as pretreatment solvents to fractionate Hyparrhenia filipendula stalks was investigated. The DES comprised Ethylene glycol (EG) and citric acid (CA) mixed at three different molar ratios; 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1. For all experiments, the pretreatment temperature was 100 °C and pretreatment time was 4 h in a 90 ml Parr reactor. The effect of the concentration of the NaOH, fiber/solvent ratio and molar ratio of the DES on the chemical composition of the biomass was investigated. The approximate quantitative analysis was used to determine the cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin composition in the samples. The results show that the highest lignin removal (59.51 %) was achieved with a treatment of 2 wt % NaOH and a liquor/fiber ratio of 10:1. However, the highest cellulose extraction was achieved with a treatment at 10 wt % NaOH and liquor/fiber ratio of 1:20. The lignin content of the sample increased after treatment with all DES solvents. The morphology, thermal stability, and functional group changes in the samples before and after pulping were also investigated.
