Abstract:
The aim of this study is to characterize the release of sulfur during pyrolysis and gasification of different biomasses (agricultural residues: corn residues and colza straw) and waste components (cardboard and wool). The study focuses on the influence of the type and chemical composition of the feedstock, the initial chemical forms of S, and the temperature. A leaching technique was applied to the selected resources to quantify the different initial chemical forms (organic/inorganic) of S. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations were performed using Factsage 7.3 software to determine the potential stable sulfur compounds in the condensed and gas phases as a function of temperature and Equivalence Ratio. Pyrolysis experiments were carried out in a lab-scale induction heated reactor at 790°C and 840°C. Experimental results showed a different distribution of sulfur in the solid and gas phases for each feedstock, which can be partly explained by the different chemical forms of S in these feedstocks. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature from 790°C to 840°C does not have a significant effect on the sulfur distribution. A study of the interactions between sulfur and the ash-forming elements is necessary to clarify the effect of the elementary composition of the feedstock and specifically the major elements of ash on the distribution.
