Abstract:
In the production process of biodiesel, glycerine is a by-product released in considerable quantities. While the crude glycerine has a purity of around 80%, it can be upgraded through mechanical and thermal process steps into technical and high-purity grade. However, color and odor may remain after these steps not matching the specification for technical or pharmaceutical applications. Adsorption of these components on Activated Carbon (AC) can make these grades achievable. Different AC grades have been compared and a meso-/microporous AC has been found promising in laboratory isotherm tests. The industrial installation of this AC type in a 2 m³ mobile filter has shown that high-purity glycerine is achievable at competitive cost.
